Understanding exam & academic stress
Academic stress in India carries a weight that is hard to overstate: single exams framed as deciding an entire future, families investing savings in coaching, and identity fused with rank. That framing is what makes ordinary exam nerves become something more serious.
Performance and arousal follow an inverted U. Beyond a point more anxiety reduces recall, slows processing and produces blanking in the exam hall despite genuine preparation. Students frequently conclude they are not capable, when the problem is arousal rather than ability.
Signs to look for
Everyone experiences some of these sometimes. What matters is how many, how long, and how much they interfere with your life.
In the student
- Studying long hours with falling retention
- Blanking during tests despite knowing the material
- Sleep loss, appetite change, headaches, stomach problems
- Irritability and withdrawal from family and friends
- Statements about being worthless, or that there is no point
Warning signs for parents
- Talking about disappearing, or that everyone would be better off
- Giving up things they used to enjoy entirely
- Extreme reactions to a single poor score
- Any mention of self-harm — treat this as urgent
When to seek help
You do not need to be in crisis to deserve support. Consider speaking to someone if:
- Immediately if there is any talk of self-harm or suicide
- If sleep and appetite have been disturbed for weeks
- If performance is falling despite increasing effort
- If the student has withdrawn from everyone
What helps
Managing arousal, not just revising more
Techniques for exam-hall anxiety — paced breathing, structured first five minutes, practising under timed conditions — often recover more marks than additional hours of study.
Separating results from worth
Much of the damage comes from identity being fused with rank. Therapy that loosens that link both reduces distress and, generally, improves performance.
Bringing parents into it
Parental anxiety transmits directly. Sessions that include parents, focusing on how encouragement is expressed, frequently change the atmosphere at home more than anything the student does alone.
Common questions
Is some exam stress not useful?
Moderate stress does improve focus. The relationship reverses beyond a point, and chronic high stress impairs the memory and reasoning exams actually test.
My child says they will disappoint us. How should I respond?
Say explicitly and repeatedly that your regard for them is not conditional on the result. Students often assume it is even when parents believe they have made the opposite clear.
Can therapy fit around a coaching schedule?
Yes. Online sessions in the evening or at weekends are the usual arrangement, and it is generally a better use of an hour than another practice paper.
