Understand it first
What you’re dealing with, explained plainly.
40 guides to the difficulties we see most often, written for India and free of jargon. Each covers what it actually feels like, when to seek help, and what genuinely helps.
These pages are information, not a diagnosis. In immediate distress, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
40 conditions
Anxiety
Anxiety
Anxiety is your threat system doing its job at the wrong time and volume. When worry becomes constant, hard to switch off and physically exhausting, it is worth addressing.
Health Anxiety
Health anxiety is not imagining symptoms. The sensations are real; the difficulty is the catastrophic meaning attached to them and everything you do to feel certain.
OCD
OCD is a cycle: an unwanted thought creates intense distress, and something you do brings relief. The relief is what teaches the brain to keep sending the thought.
Panic Attacks
A panic attack is a false alarm from your body’s emergency system — intense, frightening, and physically harmless. The fear of the next one is what turns it into a disorder.
Phobias
A phobia is an intense, specific fear that is out of proportion to the real danger. It is also among the most treatable difficulties in mental health.
Social Anxiety
Social anxiety is the fear of being judged, and the exhausting effort of trying to prevent it. It is far more common than it looks, precisely because it is hidden well.
Stress
Neurodevelopmental
Behaviour
Anger
Anger is usually the visible layer over something else — hurt, fear, shame or exhaustion. Working on it means getting underneath it, not just counting to ten.
Gambling & Gaming
Gambling apps are engineered around near-misses and fast rewards. Getting caught is not a character failing, and the debt spiral has a recognisable shape.
Phone & Social Media Dependence
Your phone is engineered to be difficult to put down. Struggling with it is not a character flaw, and there are approaches that work better than willpower.
Self-Harm
Self-harm is most often an attempt to cope with feelings that have become unbearable. Understanding what it does for you is where change begins.
Substances
Self & identity
Emotional Regulation
Some people feel emotions faster, more intensely and for longer than others. That is a difference in sensitivity, and regulation is a skill that can be learned.
Imposter Syndrome
Imposter feelings are the conviction that you have got here by luck and will eventually be found out. Evidence does not shift it, because it reinterprets evidence.
Low Self-Esteem
Low self-esteem is a set of conclusions you drew about yourself, usually early and usually from other people. Conclusions can be revisited.
Perfectionism
Perfectionism is not high standards. It is the belief that anything short of flawless is failure, and it usually produces less rather than more.
Procrastination
Procrastination is usually about avoiding a feeling rather than avoiding work. That is why time-management advice so often fails.
Body & health
Body Image
Body image is the relationship between how you look and how you feel about yourself. When appearance starts deciding your worth, it becomes worth addressing.
Chronic Illness & Pain
Persistent pain and long-term illness carry a psychological load that is rarely treated. Addressing it does not mean anyone thinks the pain is in your head.
Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are about control, coping and identity far more than food. They are serious, they occur at every body size, and they respond to treatment.
PMS & PMDD
Most people notice some premenstrual change. PMDD is a different order of severity, and it is a recognised condition rather than an overreaction.
Pregnancy & Postpartum
Depression and anxiety around pregnancy and birth are common, treatable, and nothing to do with being a bad parent.
Serious mental illness
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is not ordinary mood swinginess. It involves distinct episodes lasting days or weeks that noticeably change how you function.
Psychosis & Schizophrenia
Psychosis is treatable, and getting help early makes a real difference to recovery. It is also one of the most stigmatised experiences in mental health, which delays that help.
Suicidal Thoughts
If you are having these thoughts right now, please talk to someone tonight. They are a sign of unbearable pain, not of weakness, and they can change.
Life events
Caregiver Stress
Caring for someone is often invisible, unpaid and unrelenting. Burning out does not mean you love them less.
Divorce & Separation
The end of a marriage is a bereavement with paperwork, and in India usually with an audience. Both parts deserve support.
Financial Stress
Money worry is one of the most common causes of sustained distress, and one of the least discussed because of the shame attached.
Grief & Loss
Grief is not a problem to be solved. It is a response to loss that needs room — though sometimes it gets stuck, and then support helps.
Infertility
Infertility is a grief that repeats monthly, usually in private, often while being asked when you plan to have children.
Loneliness
Loneliness is not about how many people are around you. It is the gap between the connection you want and the connection you feel — which is why it is possible in a full house.
Relationship Difficulties
Most couples argue about the same two or three things for years. The content changes; the pattern does not. Changing the pattern is what helps.
Workplace Bullying
Sustained mistreatment at work is a health issue, not a resilience problem. The doubt about whether it counts is itself part of the pattern.
